Jennifer Day – Math

My name is Jennifer Day. I love teaching at KCIA in 7th grade Math! Over the past 30 years, I have crafted my teaching in all subject areas, across all grades. I have taught first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, gifted education for fifth and sixth grades, seventh grade ELA and Social Studies, worked with K-5 students as a library media specialist, and taught Math Methods for undergraduate students at William Jewell College, as an adjunct instructor. In addition, I became a GKC Writing Project Teacher Consultant and did some instructional coaching in a private school working on integration of writing and technology with K-8 students. Another opportunity I loved was supervising student teachers for William Jewell College. For PAEMST, or Presidential Awards for Excellence in Math and Science teaching, I served as an award application evaluator for the state of Missouri. Over the years, I have written and been awarded several grants: “Each One Teach One,” fostering parent/child reading partnerships; “Hands-On to the Write Way,” a science/writing incentive grant; “Family Math Extravaganza,” a building-wide celebration of authentic math learning; and “Children in the Marketplace,” a building-wide economics program, and “What’s Your Brief About Research,” an integrated, inquiry-based research process model. Much of my professional experience has been spent in leadership positions for professional organizations which gave me opportunities to work with rural, urban, and suburban districts, to impact students of all backgrounds. Some of the leadership roles included: International Literacy Zone Coordinator for Missouri State Council of Reading, Teaching That Makes Sense Educational Consultant and chairperson for the Great Kids Can Read Reading Award. I received my Bachelor’s of Science degree 1st-8th grade from William Jewell College. Then I received my Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from UMKC. After that, I received my Library Media Specialist certification. I value life long learning. You will often find me continuing my education with classes or webinars that help me fine tune my teaching craft! Outside of school, I enjoy exercising: walking, lifting weights, and going to Jazzercise dance aerobics classes. I love spending time with my family and friends, reading, traveling, watching movies, and cheering on my favorite sports teams! I am looking forward to learning with the KCIA students, families, staff, administration, and community! It’s going to be a great year!
